Ghana: EU Provides Job Creation Support

The government of Ghana has been allocated €17 million by the European Union (EU) to expand the green skills development component of the National Green Jobs Strategy.

This development, Development Diaries gathered, aims to strengthen efforts by the government in implementing the strategy.

In a speech read on his behalf, Ghana’s Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, said the strategy was designed to promote the creation of decent green jobs through inter-sectoral linkages and cooperation.

According to him, it will enhance the coordination of interventions that impact on green jobs across the sectors, promoting green skills development, supporting green enterprises to grow and expand, facilitating the mobilisation and accessibility to green financial resources.

‘When these interrelated components are well implemented, an enabling environment would be created for the green and circular economy to blossom and its impact effectively harnessed for job creation’, he said.

He was speaking at the 2022 Green Job Fair on the theme, ‘Green and Circular Economy: A Sure Way of Creating Decent and Sustainable Employment and Jobs’.

It was gathered that about 1,000 job seekers, mostly youths, filled the Prempeh Assembly Hall to get connected with potential employers.

The fair was organised as part of SNV’s EU-funded Boosting Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana (GrEEn) project.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Youth in Green Ghana Module is one of the measures to achieve Ghana’s sustainable development.

The focus is to engage youths in undertaking horticultural activities with the aim
of beautifying cities and keeping them green.
