United Nations (UN) is seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Senior Political Affairs Officer.

The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, analyse and monitor political developments and emerging issues in the country/region with respect to implementation of mandate
  • Prepare analysis, assessments and reports on the implementation of the peace agreement and developments in the centre of the country
  • Assess implications and make recommendations to the director of mediation section on possible policies, strategies and other measures to address issues of concern and to advance mandated objectives, with a special focus on the implementation of the peace agreement and the situation in the centre of the country
  • Identify emerging issues and provide advice to the director of mediation section on the implementation of the peace agreement and the situation in the centre of the country
  • Manage the secretariat of the ‘Comite de suivi de l’Accord’ and its four subcommittees
  • Manage information to ensure its accessibility and utility
  • Prepare summary and analytical reports including, but not limited to, situation reports, briefing notes, option papers, code cables, and input for the reports of the secretary-general to the Security Council
  • Prepare and review contextual information materials, such as background notes, analytical materials and assessments on political and related policy options, supporting the implementation of the peace agreement and efforts to address the situation in the centre of the country

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) degree in Political Science, International Relations, International Economics, Law, Public Administration, Economy, or a related field
  • First university degree with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
  • Ten years, minimum, of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, international relations, conflict resolution, or a related area
  • Extensive experience in political analysis and diplomacy
  • Experience with practices and procedures on conflict resolution in an international organisation or government
  • Experience in mediation and multilateral or bilateral negotiations
  • Experience in supporting the implementation of peace agreements
  • Experience in providing political support and guidance to peacemaking, peacekeeping operations and/or good offices mission
  • Experience in institution building and economic or financial aspects of negotiation (desirable)
  • Knowledge of and experience in the region (desirable)
  • Fluency in English and French (both oral and written)
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
