The Gambia: Beakanyang Advocates for Response Fund

The Executive Director of the rights group Beakanyang, Nfamara Jawneh, has called for the establishment of a civil society Covid-19 response fund in The Gambia. Speaking on the role of civil society organisations in mitigating the impact of the life-threatening disease, Jawneh said that the Covid-19 pandemic was posing serious global and national development challenges that require well-coordinated efforts in response.

While commending the response of the Gambian government overall, Jawneh lamented that the government did not put forward any measures to support citizens with basic needs that would be hard for such citizens to meet on their own during a shutdown. He called on the government to provide support to vulnerable citizens.
